The COVID Emergency Rental Assistance (CERA) program was recently initiated by the federal government. CERA is a rental assistance program that was initiated to assist both landlords and tenants regarding back rent and utilities. On March 22, 2021 the Michigan Supreme Court issued an Order stating that in cases for nonpayment of rent, a court must pause (or stay) further proceedings after pretrial and not proceed to judgment if a defendant files for CERA and notifies the court of the same.
